News / Tone of Hoover Dam
« Last post by Tanner on March 27, 2012, 11:17:33 am »
The tone of the short story, "The Art of the Dam",  is honored and elated. Everyone can agree that the way the Hoover Dam is described makes it seem like a great accomplishment and achievement to what humans can do, and why they have come so far. Humans look up to the Hoover Dam and can't stop being in awe, feeling proud of what people can do. Who would ever think that regular human beings can get so far? It's truly amazing to what people can do, as long as they set their mind to it. Being a child, computers and all that other technology has been here since birth, but past generations would see this as a true beauty, and many must have been shocked and looked at that magnificent piece of artistic structure as a wonder.

A few words that were used to describe the tone in this passage would be marvel of modern engineering, grand design, and glorious example of modern art. All of these compliments and praise towards the sculpture are all positive, and all revolve around how modern it is and how beautiful and uplifting it is to look at the masterpiece. Like previously mentioned, many people would have been in shock to see such a great and uplifting work of art right in front of their eyes. The workers must have worked so hard to create this "marvel of modern engineering" and the designer should feel great for constructing this "grand design". Many could argue that they have seen better, and this is just some type of electricity generator, but it also stands proud as a marvelous example of human accomplishment and achievements.

Paper bags are far less reliable, more wasteful, and more harmful than they should be, and the producers need to stop creating them. Sure, the bags are fast production at a rate of 1800 bags per hour! But, the rate that these paper bags are being created are far more than the speed it takes to grow a tree. All of the trees being made are just getting wasted on bags that can even mess up in the fast production by one tiny error. It has been said that paper bags are really easy to make; however, usually if something seems easy to make, it will most likely break even easier. Almost everyone has had a lunch in a brown paper bag where it just breaks out of nowhere, because of all the weight when it's only about three pounds, if that. The paper bag has been called "the perfect bag", and that's more of an opinion than fact. How many times has a paper bag just been thrown away and forgotten? If something was so perfect, anyone could agree that it would not be wasted. As stated before, the producers of the paper bag should really stop creating them, and they are harming the environment.

Kony 2012
The question, ?Do you think Kony 2012 is legitimate?? happens to be asked nowadays, after that video went viral. Nobody actually knows the background about Kony 2012, and whether the video was made as a type of scam or people actually care seems questionable. The makers of the video definitely had to put a ton of time into the video, seeing as the video includes thirty minutes of pure editing in order to bring people to the event or occasion; however, some people are against the concept and believe the clips are fake and just a scam to take their money. The Kony 2012 campaign was in affect for a year now and as soon as a video goes worldly, many people suddenly support it. There are many other problems in the world right now, and this could be considered a scam, creating distractions on other worldwide problems such as SOPA. The answer given to that question ?Do you think Kony 2012 is legitimate?? could be answered by no, and can be proven in fact, not theory.
Kony 2012 was said to not be a non-profit organization to start out with. Although there are requirements to pay for t-shirts and bracelets, that should be on their own money due to guilt and feeling ashamed of what happens with Joseph Kony, including all the bad he supposedly does. The campaign has brought in about 8 million dollars so far and only 25 to 33 percent of that money actually goes to the campaign. If 25 percent of the earned money was to go to the actual campaign in order to help stop Joseph Kony, then only 2 million dollars would go to the African nation to stop this violence. The other 6 million dollars has not been told of what it goes to, but that should be a red flag right there in order to stop sending money. The Kony campaign receives support from all over the world; however, many are unaware of the percentage that actually goes to the campaign, 25 percent, and should be informed in order to request their money back immediately. The founders of Youtube should honestly take the video down, seeing as though there are many complaints saying how fake the video seems to be.
All in all, this revolves around only one person?s stand on the Kony 2012 discussion. This attempt at stopping Joseph Kony was going on since last fall, and nobody has caught onto it until this video went viral. How could a video make so many supporters come together and donate money that could be going to a non-profitable charity organization of some sort, rather than a supposed scam? Many could argue that the t-shirts, bracelets, and all other attire makes the other 6 million dollars disappear, but where does the money from the sales of the attire go to? Instead of selling all of this attire, the campaign founders should actually let the government aware of all that happens in the world, rather than sitting there collecting money and making profits. If the campaign founders actually tried to stop this crisis, then they should probably get over to the African nation and put a stop to it immediately. As humans, opinions are made, and there are many viewpoints to look at the topic of Kony 2012.
